We read in verse 31 that she was “hated,” a word that in context means “loved less” (v. 30), not that Jacob maliciously detested her. Still, this is a sad situation for Leah. However, the Lord loves Leah even when Jacob does not. He “saw” her (v. 31), a verb Scripture often uses right before God acts on behalf of the oppressed. Many of you know brother Doug. Although after reading the first chapter my initial impression was negative, not in the sense that the book was wrong, unprofitable or negative but rather in the sense that it was merely preaching to the choir for men already devoted to expository preaching, my impression soon changed and I highly recommend the book Reviews: Elsewhere, the Lord says that this new covenant will involve a regathering of his people through a kind of new exodus (Ezek. –28; cf. Deut. –4) and a pouring out of his Spirit in a fresh way, such that all the people of God will be given new hearts to trust and obey their King (Joel –29; Acts –21).
